Alcoholic Beverages Drinks Spain

Sangria

One of the most popular alcoholic beverages in Spain, Sangria gets its name from the Spanish word sangre, which means “blood.” There are many variations of this drink, but the base is always red wine, to which other spirits and chopped fruits are added.

The Sangria recipe I’m sharing today is my favorite combination so far. Feel free to adjust the ingredients and quantities to your taste.

(Serves 4)

Ingredients:

  • 2 bottles red wine (preferably full-bodied)
  • 1 apple, with skin, cored and thinly sliced
  • 2 peaches, peeled and diced
  • 2 oranges, well washed, quartered and thinly sliced
  • 1 lemon, prepared the same way as the oranges
  • Juice of 1 orange
  • Juice of ½ lemon
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • approx. 50 ml brandy
  • approx. 50 ml orange liqueur
  • Sugar, to taste (I use about 5 tbsp)
  • Optional: sparkling water (I usually skip this)

Instructions:

Place the sliced fruits in a large jug or bowl. Pour over the juices, brandy, and orange liqueur.

Add the cinnamon stick and sprinkle with sugar. Stir well, cover tightly, and leave in a cool, shaded place (or refrigerator) for a few hours.

Remove the cinnamon stick and add the red wine. Stir, taste, and adjust by adding water and/or more sugar if needed.

Serve chilled, optionally with ice.
