I’m a big fan of popping into IKEA for all sorts of kitchen gadgets. They’re inexpensive, practical, and often quite stylish. My favorite? Their garlic press — it’s the best! I’ve tried a few others, including high-quality brands, but this one leaves almost no waste.
But back to the food… There’s another reason I love IKEA: Köttbullar, the iconic Swedish meatballs served with sauce and lingonberry jam. You can grab them at the restaurant for little money, buy frozen in their store, or make them at home yourself. Honestly, homemade tastes just as good and it’s wonderfully simple.

Ingredients (serves 4–6)
For the meatballs:
600 g ground pork and beef mix
30 g breadcrumbs
1 egg
2½ tbsp all-purpose flour
1 tsp ground allspice (or crush whole berries in a mortar and sift)
½ tsp black pepper
½ tsp white pepper
½ tsp Worcestershire sauce
1 small onion, finely grated
Salt, to taste
2 tbsp butter
2 tbsp oil
For the sauce:
About 0.5–0.75 L meat stock (can be from a cube)
1 heaping tbsp all-purpose flour
1 tbsp heavy cream (36%)
Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
Prepare the meatballs:
Lightly salt the meat and blend in a food processor until smooth. Transfer to a bowl and mix in the egg, flour, Worcestershire sauce, grated onion, allspice, black and white pepper, and breadcrumbs. Mix thoroughly by hand. Cover and refrigerate for about 20 minutes.
Form the meatballs:
With damp hands, roll the mixture into balls about 2–2.5 cm in diameter.
Cook the meatballs:
Heat the butter and oil in a large skillet. Fry a few meatballs at a time (don’t overcrowd the pan). They should be able to move freely when you shake the pan. Brown them evenly on all sides.
Prepare the sauce:
Once all meatballs are cooked, check the remaining fat in the pan. Add a little more butter if necessary. Heat the pan over medium heat, sprinkle in the flour, and whisk to combine with the fat. Cook for a few seconds. Gradually add the stock, adjusting for the desired consistency. Stir in the cream and season with salt and pepper. The sauce should be light brown.
Serve:
Serve the meatballs with mashed potatoes or fries, accompanied by lingonberry jam.
These Swedish meatballs are creamy, flavorful, and comforting — a classic dish that’s perfect for cozy dinners at home.
