I absolutely love pea soup… Unfortunately, it’s quite heavy and, to be honest, can cause some bloating. Berlin-style potato soup tastes similar to pea soup and is very filling. And that bacon… just irresistible!

Ingredients:
- 100 g (about 3.5 oz) bacon
- 600 g (about 1.3 lbs) floury potatoes
- ½ small celery root
- 2 carrots
- 1 onion
- 600–800 ml (2½–3¼ cups) vegetable broth
- Fresh parsley, finely chopped
- 2 allspice berries
- 1 bay leaf
- 2 tbsp marjoram
- Berlin-style sausages or other small sausages, sliced
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- Oil, for frying
Instructions:
Cook the bacon: In a medium pot, fry the bacon cut into strips or small cubes.
Add vegetables: Add the potatoes, carrots, celery, and onion. If there isn’t enough fat rendered from the bacon, add a little oil. Sauté the vegetables with the bacon briefly.
Simmer: Pour in about 600 ml of vegetable broth. Add the allspice berries, bay leaf, and marjoram. Cover the pot and cook over medium heat until the vegetables are soft, about 25 minutes.
Mash the vegetables: Remove the allspice berries and bay leaf. Mash the vegetables with a potato masher. If the soup is too thick, add a bit more broth.
Add sausages: Stir in the sliced sausages and heat the soup through. Season with salt and pepper.
Finish: Sprinkle with chopped parsley before serving.
